Dear Ecie and family
My prayers will be with you during this difficult time. I will also read the Vajracutter Sutra for your speedy recovery as LZR has advised. Your experience is such a strong lesson to me on impermanence, as well as the security of guru devotion.
May you recover soon.
With love and prayers

Dear Ecie and family
There is lots of love and prayers coming your way from the steamy Queensland jungle. We recited Guru Puja last night, with the photo of you and William on Tara's altar, and dedicated like this:
This puja is sponsored for Ecie Hursthouse of Auckland. We dedicate all the merit of this practice for her swift recovery from the injuries sustained in a recent car accident. May she be free from permanent injury and pain. May she take the suffering she is experiencing onto the path and in this way may it be a cause for her to more quickly achieve realisations and complete, perfect enlightenment. May she have a long life and continue to be of great benefit to others.
Some of us you haven't met or don't know well but we are connected to you through Tenzin -- nuns here now at Chenrezig Institute and other Chenrezig nuns who are now in different parts of the world. Medicine Buddha puja is being recited every day here for you and we managed 112 Vajra Cutter sutras in 48 hours and that continues, along with other prayers.
Thank you so much William for the daily blog; it is an amazing teaching on impermanence -- also on the power of practice and of devotion to one's guru and to the dharma ... What I am learning of Ecie's life through this outpouring of support here is an inspiration. So is what I know of your family.
Lots of love

What great news that Ecie has improved enough to be moved to the 1:2.5 ward! She seems to clearly want to make it back, so may she continue with persistence (as we know she can) on her journey home.
Thank you for the continuing progress reports William. Health, happiness and freedom from suffering to Ecie and all her closest.

William, it is touching my soul and spirit to read your daily notes, the care, love, compassion, wisdom, fear, suffering, humour, the whole human experience you are describing so elaborately. The photos are grand, thank you for showing beautiful Ecie, a stunning woman. I wish you guys all what you need to take this extraordinarily painful yet uplifting experience as it unfolds. I am grateful to have met you and thank you for allowing me participating in your lives. I do pray and think about you and take whatever teaching I can from your words. If there is anything else I can do please do ask.
Yours humbly,

Dearest William, Ecie and family
Thanks for keeping all your friends abreast of what is happening for Ecie and the family - it is great news that she is slowly getting out of danger. Thanks also for the lovely photographs - of course, the 1970 photos are how I most remember her when we all met in Kathmandu for the Kopan retreat. The recent photo of you both was very moving - a life of practice does show. Dolma and Luke were very shocked by the news and photos of the car, and send their love as well.
Your are all constantly in my thoughts and prayers.

Thinking and praying for you all. Students at Maitreya Institute in Holland are reciting and dedicating as Lama Zopa Rinpoche advised. Really feel it is our responsibility to help where we can to support. Your updates William, bring home the reality of such a situation and help shake up some of us "complacent Buddhists". Dear friends:
You don't know me but I am a student from Jamyang in London. I have attended classes for the last two years with Gehse and it's been wonderful. I used to study at Sakya Monastery in Seattle USA before coming to Scotland to live. I have been a devout Buddhist for many years, but have so much to learn!
Esther at Jamyang had sent a request to have prayers said for Ecie when she said she had been in an accident I had no idea of how bad it was, my only thought was to protect her, give her love and make sure that we was doing well. Below is my dedication for Ecie and I will continue to say prayers for her no matter the outcome. Please let her know that to me she is a beloved sister, mother, daughter of mine and I shall pray for her with as much love and compassion for her that I have for my own children! Big Hugs
Dendzin Chodon (Kathryn McIntosh)
Esther:
At 5:45 arrived home ate my tea with very quick blessings to all vegetables on my plate then began prayers for Ecie. (if you wish you may share this with Ecie if you like)
I completed 20 prostrations as promised. I lit two candles to provide Ecie with warm light to shine on her beautiful face, and give her warmth. Just as I would provide warmth and comfort to my own child in this life so too I thought of Ecie as a beloved child, sister or mother as I completed each prostration. I sent the light to her. I wished with all my heart to send to her love and comfort. I concentrated on this as I did my prostrations. As the incense burned on the shrine before Lord Buddha I wished that it brought sweet scents to Ecie, and that the scent would also provide her some comfort and take her mind away from her pain and suffering. As I completed my prostrations I envisioned Lord Buddha smiling at dear Ecie, gently holding her hands and speaking softly to comfort her, and helping her in her time of need.
I recited Vajrasattva prayers for Ecie 20 times dedicating each recitation to her and focusing on Lama Zopa's words below:
"For Ecie Hursthouse, if it is beneficial and there is karma for her quick recovery, and for her to live in bodhichitta and actualise enlightenment as quickly as possible. If not, for her to have a peaceful death and be reborn in the pureland and to achieve enlightenment as quickly as possible, or to receive a perfect human rebirth, meet a perfectly qualified Mahayana virtuous friend, be able to practise the Mahayana path and to become enlightened as quickly as possible."
At 12:00 to 13:00 today I read the Vajra Cutter Sutra 5 times dedicating this to Ecie with these dedications in my mind. I then completed readings 10 more times from 18:30 onward. Total readings for Ecie 15. Sorry it could not be more, but that is all the time I had today. I will continue to keep her in my prayers every night as long as she needs it.
It is my most sincere wish that the beloved Ecie be able to feel the true warmth of all of our compassionate thoughts and wishes for her, and that no matter what happens to her body in this life that she remain happy and know that she is well loved. I have never met Ecie, but I am sure that she would understand my sincere wishes for her.
Tomorrow morning when I wake I will again say a prayer for her, then again during my lunch break and again when I come home. Please keep us informed of how she is doing so that prayers can continue as needed Esther. People like Ecie are rare, hard to find and harder even to replace in this life. Thank you very much dear friend for keeping us informed . |

Hello Ecie and William,
Wow - what a very intense time you are going through. Thank you for sharing the nitty gritty of it. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
While the pain and challenges of the present must feel overwhelming at times, please take heart in knowing that it is clear to those of us on the "outside" that Ecie is swiftly bound for bliss and the fulfillment of all her extraordinary wishes no matter what happens in this life. Because of her sincere practice and inspired service, this present trauma can only be accelerating the awakening process. There is no other possibility.
You are both remarkably virtuous people.
Hang in there. May you receive all the healing and support intended for you by us ordinary ones and the Holy Ones.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche said to please help Ecie in the following way … some of this you may already do.
When Ecie can see/wakes up … show her my photo/HHDL's and Vajra yogini.
Recite in her ear when you can … even she is not conscious … Buddha's name mantra and Maitreya mantra . If the person who recites this for her has done well Nyung Naes or recites mani mantra more than 10,000/day … then that has the most effect for her.
If there is such a person, then after reciting the mantra's they can blow on her body.
Of course can recite other mantra's for her but above are the main ones.
Please tell her I ( Lama Zopa) have her in my heart, and doing prayers for her.
"Our problem is that inside us there's a mind going, "Impossible, impossible, impossible. I can't, I can't, I can't." We have to banish that mind from this solar system. Anything is possible; everything is possible. Sometimes you feel that your dreams are impossible, but they're not. Human beings have great potential; they can do anything. The power of the mind is incredible, limitless."

Dear Ecie, William and family,
My deepest sympathies to you all and prayers for Ecie's quick recovery.
Jan 21st was the day of my father's funeral, and reading today this news of the accident is another reminder of the transience of our lifetimes. My Dad always told me that it is not the length of the life that matters (he died at 87), but the difference that we make to humanity by what we do in this lifetime. Ecie's immense energy, courage, and compassion is an inspiration to me and many who I have met that have known, and learnt from Ecie. Her work in many areas has touched so many and improved lives ...... there is much work for Ecie yet to do and much that I/we have yet to learn from her.
Im sure that in her recovery, with her own nursing training and wonderful sense of humour, there will be many things that the rest of us can learn from Ecie through this process. And it is the selflessness of Ecie that she will use her own pain and discomfort to teach us all something new in the Dharma.
William - thank you for this blog and your generosity of spirit in sharing this process and your thoughts with us.
Good luck and love from all of us. |

Many thanks for your clear reports - love to all there,

Hi Wiliam,
Thanks for the daily postings as you and the family deal with this crisis and for the honesty and candour as it has unfolded. Cheers,
