William, is there a nursery for newborns with a glass ovservation area in Ecie's health center? THAT part of the hospital generally makes makes a really nice goal. When Ecie is a little sturdier, you can take her to the pediatrics ward, but she can't play yet--except in her mind. Much love, A.-la

Dear William, Ecie and loving family

Nice to see you the other day Ecie-la along with your caring and compassionate Bodhisattva son Joesph, and to be able to reflect on how awesome it has been, despite this suffering far worse than most of us can even imagine, unfathomable, more terrible that you have had to bear with this flowering of past karmic causes.

How amazing it is that so many people are connected to you, through this blog and that we are praying and spreading the dharma as well as wishing you a rapid flourishing health from the four corners of the world, as the maori say, Nga Hau E Wha.

It was lovely to see you sister. You are doing very well thanks to the love of your family, your extended family and because as you said, you are in your guru's heart. And he has written you so.

I dedicate all this love, this compassion and all this goodwill to all sentient beings. May they be free from suffering, all of it, and from the effects of samsaric life.

See you soon and rest in the firm knowledge all is well at Amitabha and all the people who read this will support us in ensuring it is so.

Arohatinonui, Love and peace

Dear Ecie,
I don't know you but got the vajra cutter sutra from my LYWA newsletter and have been reciting it for you pretty much daily as well as monitoring your progress. Today I was inspired by Lama Yeshe's quote about the mind and want to share something my mother did.
A few years back she slipped on a patch of ice and badly shattered her shoulder - socket included. What followed were surgeries, nails, plates, I don't need to tell you :) and the diagnosis that she would never be able to move her arm upwards beyond a 45 degree angle. (Just try to comb your hair that way!) Should she succeed to raise it shoulder height at 70 years old she would be considered a miracle. Bravely screaming her way through countless hours of physical therapy she achieved that 90 degree angle after 4 months. (Combing your hair gets doable) Considered medical miracle she happily kept to her daily routine of prayer, meditation and physical exercises, improving to about 120 degrees where she reached a plateau. (Combing your hair is a breeze) Then, maybe 6 months later she calls me excitedly - the following are her words: "This morning I had an epiphany while doing my practice. I realized the problem was not my shoulder but my mind. I allowed the doctors to condition me to believe I could never fully raise my arm and today I thought, well, if the problem was my arm, according to them I could barely raise it at all so that can't be it. Therefore the problem must be my mind and in that case I CAN do something about it. And with this realization I simply raised my arm above my head..."
Needless to say my mom is a very stubborn person and a sincere practitioner - happily using her arm to the fullest...
May your recovery continue to be swift - I look forward to a picture of you sitting cross-legged :) - aurelia

On this Buddha Day when merit is much multiplied, I am happy to have made a donation to Amitabha Hospice (thanks for the donation information on the Hospice website -- makes it easy!).

May the Hospice be stable and harmonious. May its activities flourish and be of immense benefit to those it cares for, their families and to all the volunteers who make it possible. And especially, I dedicate whatever merit there is in this small action to Ecie's complete recovery, that she may be free of mental suffering, that she may continue to receive all the care and expert intervention she needs and that this experience may be nothing less than a cause for swift enlightenment for her, for her family and for all those people around the world whose prayers and practices are being dedicated to the same goal.

Dear William & Ecie,
We've been away down country and have just had a chance to catch up with your situation. The bone photos are scary.
We went to the funeral of a relative. A lovely, quiet, dignified lady (87yrs) who had touched so many people with her kindness and affection. There were masses at the funeral and I know that she would have been stunned to see so many people there and she would have denied that she had ever done anything more than just listen to their problems. I guess that this is the way with people of this ilk, like you Ecie, they just go about doing what they do, seemingly unaware of the value of their contribution. We are pleased that 'things' are progressing and that there is a light of sorts at the end of the tunnel. Take care you two and keep on keeping on. Kevin & Jude

Ecie and William, I know that you're inexpressibly moved by the obvious outpouring of affection and concern for you both and for everyone at work on this journey with you. Maine to California, the U.K., the Subcontinent of Asia, Taiwan, all of the land down under represented and united in loving-kindness and compassion--WOW?

Figuratively, there are forty-ton water tankers aplenty for each of us to collide with; those of us who haven't done that yet are certain to do so, if we live any length of time. Commonly consequences are plaid out in solitude. Your gifts to us are rooted in your willingness TO SHARE the processes of pain, all sorts of pain. This is an incalculable benefit to all of us.

I wouldn't lay a moment's suffering at any of your doors, but, if we must suffer, you've clearly figured out how to do so in ways that benefit lives being plaid out all over Earth. Clearly, when the good stuff is good, it is measurelessly good.

I'm so sorry about that tooth. I have a dead and blackened tooth in the middle of my smile; I've had it for forty years. Every once in awhile I knock it a really sturdy mug--or faint and loosen it on the rounded edge of a porcelain sink, etc., and then it tightens up again. Four years into treatment for invasive ductile carcinoma, our dentist retired and refered us to a new doctor. Dr. Standlee evaluated me as a new patient and asked, "So, are you going to let me fix that blackened tooth? I could give you a new tooth and whiten up the remainder of your teeth to match the cap on the dead tooth." Right.

I fixed Dr. Standlee with my one remaining sighted eye while he pulled pulled the tools and lighttrees out of my mouth and responded. "Dr. Standlee, a woman with SEVENTEEN THOUSAND DOLLAR BREAST DOES NOT NEED a new tooth." Poor Dr. Standlee; I thought we'd have to resucitate him.

More laughing when you're better. Lots more, in fact, so get better. A.-la

William, a lot of THE STUFF in the way of Ecie's faculties is TRAUMA. We will all want to attribute the impairment of Ecie's short term memory to bruising of her brains--in addition to chemical burn due to continuing medication for pain, repeated anesthesias, IV antibiotics interfering with the upate of nutriets, sleep deprivation, etc.--and all of that that is accurate; however, at the end of the day, it is unresolved trauma that has to be addressed QUICKLY.

Thank you so much for these updates about Ecie. You must have lost count of the number of surgeries she has had!
Just wanted to pass on a little anecdote about a woman I know. Very recently, she was involved in a very serious car accident. When her husband viewed the wreckage, he could not believe someone had survived it at all. It seems that after spending days and nights at the bedside of her daughter who has since passed away, she had fallen asleep at the wheel and driven at high speed into a tree. The injuries sounded very similar to Ecie's as a matter of fact. I can't remember exactly when the accident happened but it was late last year. She is walking again and has just left the hospital. Not bad for a 62yo woman.
William, please take care of yourself, it is important that you stay strong, physically and mentally.
Kind thoughts,
Gail

Ecie and William, I have lived with breast cancer for six and one half years. I have had ten surgeries--eight in the time since I was diagnosed. I know it seems surreal that the plastic surgeon will harvest a bit of tissue here and plant it there and pirate a blood supply from the odd muscle, but they do, and they do it more creatively all the time. We are so happy that you are recuperating so quickly...so much progress every day !!! I have been practicing tonglen for you and my son, Shawn every day. He is now at the State Mental Hospital and we are praying they will be able to assess, diagnose and treat his illness effectively. We prayed for you with a group of extremely compassionate and wise friends in a Sacred Pipe Ceremony and Sweat Lodge Ceremony on Saturday. We all prayed for each other's healing and families, for the children and the healing of the Earth. William thank you so much and we love the photos especially Ecie's 1970 Peace Warrior self portrait. Was that really forty years ago? Peace, Love and Healing, Feather

I am not a religious person, nor am I superstitious but I know Ecie is well cared for by those of you who are. I have known William for only a few years and quickly realized, as did all those who benefit from his professional activities, that he is a great man. His burden is unfathomable and while I feel a bit like an intruder, I am compelled to keep abreast of Ecie's progress through his amazing writings. William, I have told you before that you are the finest I have met. Keep up the good work and hang in there.

Dear Ecie,
In the Lotus Sutra, the Buddha teaches us that all Buddhas appear in the world due to the "one great matter."

I believe, especially in Dharma communities, that, from time-to-time the Buddhas will select, work through certain individuals to remind all the Dharma students in those communities that, having received a perfect human rebirth, they must use this opportunity to practice Dharma, to not waste time, and to realize that our lives are as impermanent as a flash of lightning in the sky.

You must have great merit to be selected this time to remind us of this important teaching and shake us up out our complacency.

I send you much love and many prayers,
Munsel

Hi there – none of us know Ecie – but she is part of the FPMT family, and we look after each other, so we said 25 Diamond cutter recitations for her. I was very moved by your blog, and actually printed it out, and the graphic pictures, and read from some of it to set our motivation. Very moving, and also, very inspiring – how the Dharma can help navigate through such trauma. We actually had a Discovering Buddhism orientation – with a little time left at the end where we did the recitation – so many first timer's got a whole experience – an intro to the centre, to the course, to the sutra, and to the family feeling and how we look after each other. So many thanks for the opportunity, love from us all at Langri Tangpa Centre

Dearest Ecie,
My dear Medicine Buddha sister (we met at MB retreat in 2001 and were in Australia together, Mahamudra -- both of us, up all night doing prayers, only the two of us - on different cushions - in the Gompa).

How does one say they are sorry for such pain? We recite sutras, and mantras, and reaffirm our faith in the world.

This fall, in Elko, Nevada we started a new study group (LZR named us Namgyälma). A small group that come from different religious backgrounds, and love Lama Zopa. Last Thursday at 9pm (Friday at 3pm in NZ) four of us had just finished reciting 10 recitations of the Diamond Cutter Sutra for you as per Rinpoche's advice.

We know many other groups around the world are saying these sutras for you. And, it was very inspiring for our group (most very new to the Buddha Dharma and the recitation of sutras) to find out this was the exact time you were moved from the death and dying room to your new room. We wish you to become weller, and more well upon each breath.

With Great Love,
julie caldwell

Every Thursday, during the Medicine Buddha puja at the Leeds Jamyang centre we dedicate to you Ecie.

I'm also going to recite the Vajra Cutter sutra some more times. This is good because a) Ecie gets blessings which improve her health, and b) I study profound emptiness teachings.

Why is that? Because one does not recite anything whatsoever. Therefore it is call 'Reciting the Vaja Cutter Sutra'.

Dear Ecie -- The names "Ecie" and "Amitabha Hospice" were totally unknown to us until Lama Zopa Rinpoche published a request, on behalf of your health, for Diamond Cutter recitations. Thanks to your husband and his blog, we now know much more about you, and have also learned about the beautiful Hospice you helped build. Hopefully, in the future, you can find less dramatic ways of publicizing this great facility. May all be well with you and all you love. -- Peace and clear light, Preston and Ceci.

Dearest Ecie-la

Today was our first Amitabha Trustee meeting since you have been in hospital. You were uppermost in our minds and we certainly missed your leadership and not having someone to laugh, give cheek to and work with.

The trustees and I just wanted you to know what a blessing it has be to see such awesome support coming forward from a range of people inspired by who you are and the vision of Amitabha Hospice.

Your baby is in good hands Ecie and our motivation even greater as we strive to live up to the standards you have set.

Our love, blessings and warmest wishes to you and the family. We all look forward to seeing you soon. Our prayers are with you and thank you for the sharp reminder of our vows to do whatever we can to free all sentient beings from sufering and the causes of suffering.

With much love and metta

Hi Ecie
I started reading the Diamond Sutra soon after I heard about Rinpoche request (and feel this Ecie was certainly a very special person because I've never heard of such a request to all over the world, I founded that it was really great)
but this morning through your husband blog, I discovered that I actually know you as we did the month retreat wit Rinpoche in vajra Yogini France, a few years ago.
So from now while reciting daily the sutra, I will have your image and I have to thank you for stimulating my practice.
I wish you the best and keep you in my heart
love to your family and this wonderfull Dharma family. Immense gratefullness to Zopa Rinpoche.
big love
